APMG has
been based in Greater Manchester for over 50 years. Manchester was the
world's first industrial city and is still an important centre for science

Science and
Industry in Manchester:
- John Dalton's
atomic theory (1803) with its pioneering work on the constitution of
elements was the precursor of all modern chemistry. He was also responsible
for turning the study of weather into a science
- James
Prescott Joule discovered the first law of thermodynamics. The unit
of energy is named after Joule
- Sir Joseph
Whitworth was the father of precision engineering.
- Sir William
Fairbairn advanced boiler making and invented the riveting machine.
Also introduced cast iron beams for bridging large spans.
- James
Nasmyth invented the steam hammer
- Henry
Poynting established the mean density of the earth in 1891.
- Earnest
Rutherford working at Manchester University discovered how to split
the atom in 1919
- The first
Computer with a stored memory was developed at Manchester University
by Professors Tom Kilburn and Fred Williams
