| APMG home > about APMG > company history The history of old-established companies often includes a number of changes of name, location and range of products and services offered. APMG, formed from the merger of several companies, is no exception. In the 1930's Turner & Brown Ltd were painting and fibrous plasterwork contractors in Bolton. After the war they sought additional areas of business, which included the manufacture of industrial products from UPVC. From about 1950 this included a range of plastic fans. By 1960 they had added wooden laboratory furniture and had been acquired by a public company. A number of large Hospital laboratory contracts had been undertaken by 1970. In 1948 IMPA Ltd were established in Bury and, again looking for new business areas, became involved in both plastic fabrication and stockholding of sheets, tubes, pipe fittings etc. IMPA were acquired by Turner & Brown in 1963 and moved to the Bolton site. In early 1970 a decision was taken to downsize the combined business, and it was purchased by the present owners in September 1970 while trading as IMPA. In 1972 the business moved to larger premises, still in Bolton, and in 1974 the plastics merchanting activity was sold to Brown & Tawse PLC including the IMPA name. The remaining business was primarily plastic fabrications and plastic fans, and was renamed Associated Plastics Ltd. The expertise in plastic fabrications allowed fume scrubbers to be added to the product range. In 1980 a range of GRP-fronted fume cupboards were designed. From 1986 under a series of exploitation agreements with the Department for Education school laboratory systems Labkit and Curricula were designed, manufactured and installed. It is probable that Morgan & Grundy Ltd commenced manufacture of fume cupboards in 1944 for the atomic bomb project. By the 1980's the business had become a UK-leader in both fume cupboards and laboratory furniture. By 1993 the business had been acquired by another laboratory furniture company which then became insolvent. The assets were purchased by Associated Plastics and the business moved to Bolton. From this time Associated Plastics was reorganised as plastic fabricators and fan manufacturers and (a new) Morgan & Grundy Ltd was responsible for all fume cupboard, professional laboratory furniture and schools laboratory products. In 1998 the Bolton site was purchased by the Council for a new school. The combined business moved a short distance to our present facilities at Mount Skip lane, Little Hulton. In October 1998 the whole business was re-named APMG Limited, and has traded as APMG since then. |
